It's 'cos on the equinox, night and day are nearly exactly the same length – 12 hours – all over the world. For this reason it's called an "equinox", derived from Latin, meaning "equal night" The March equinox occurs the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line (or squiggle if you've had too much rum) in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from south to north. This happens around the 20th of March every year. On any other day of the year, the Earth's axis tilts a little away from or towards the Sun (angle of tilt often depends on your perception based on an empty rum barrel), but on this day the tilt of Earth relative to the Sun is zero (or sober), which means that Earth’s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun. (However, the tilt of Earth relative to its plane of orbit, called the ecliptic plane, is always about 23.5 degrees.)
