Jah Shaka has been operating a London-based, roots reggae Jamaican sound system since the early 1970s. His name is an amalgamation of the Rasta term for God and that of a Zulu warrior, Shaka Zulu. Jah Shaka events are renowned for attracting a wide audience from all backgrounds and races. Shaka believes it to be a testament to the quality of the message that he expounds in his choice of music and his Rastafarian beliefs. Shaka stayed true to his Rastafarian beliefs during the 1980s when many other Sound Systems had started to follow the Jamaican trend towards playing dancehall music. His refusal to compromise inspired a host of new UK reggae artists and Sound Systems such as Eastern Sher, The Disciples, Iration Steppas, Jah Warrior, Channel One Sound System, Conscious Sounds, The Rootsman and Abashanti-I. Non-reggae artists such as Basement Jaxx have also cited Jah Shaka as an influence during interviews. On his own record label he has released music from Jamaican artists such as Max Romeo, Johnny Clarke, Bim Sherman and Prince Alla as well as UK groups such as Aswad and Dread & Fred. He has released a number of dub albums, often under the Commandments of Dub banner. In 1980 Shaka played himself in the film Babylon (directed by Franco Rosso), operating his Sound System in a soundclash at the climax of the story. In 1989 Shaka visited Jamaica and worked with many musicians there, including King Tubby. The Jah Shaka Sound System continues to appear regularly in London, with occasional tours of the United States, Europe and Japan. Live footage of Shaka featured in the documentary All Tomorrow's Parties based on the musical festival, which was released in 2009

Darren has had a very varied and interesting background working in all areas of the community, in his younger years he worked for the Scottish Parliament and blew the whistle on a massive expenses fraud, astonished by the media handling of the situation, it lead to him questioning all areas of our parliamentary/government system. First hand experience mixed with his interest in words lead him to look into Law and legislation … And the massive difference between the two! Started on the Freeman exploration with years of research and study he found a lot more than he expected about how corrupt our system now is. He looked at how our communities are crumbling because of the monopolization of our services, because everything is run on profit and not efficiency. Genius Collective provided two of 2011's highlights with their appearances at the night last year, and we are delighted to be welcoming them back for more. With support from Craig Charles's 6Music Funk & Soul show behind them and a spot in the diary confirmed for this summer's Mostly Jazz festival, expect big things from this local 7-piece. Live support on the night comes from Leamington's finest funk outfit Noke Lick Masheen, Manchester-based hip hop beat technician Mecca:83 and soulful songstress Danieal, who will be opening up proceedings with an acoustic session. DJ Duo No Artificial Colours are the dominant force in the UK's house music scene; with their music consistently riding high in the Beatport Deep House charts they are receiving love from their peers and the industry alike. Never one to follow the crowd, No Artificial Colours have chosen an interesting mixture of UK and international labels to release their music on, all of which have gained attention from the likes of Jamie Jones, Maya Jane Coles, Lee Foss,Visionquest on the DJ side and from top outlets like Clash magazine, I-D mag, Beatport, Mixmag, the list goes on… No Artificial Colours are Ryan Ellis and Lewis Wright, 2 friends hailing from South East London; the boys met when they kept finding themselves booked at the same gigs, and when they often got asked by promoters if they could play back-to-back, the pairing made perfect sense. Since meeting every day has been about music for them, playing it, searching it out and making it. Their sound is evolving all the time with their sets becoming more about their own music than other peoples and often favouring a deep underlying, hypnotic vibe with various acapellas, loops and tricks to keep things exciting. Their first EP only dropped in late spring 2011 and since then they have played numerous top clubs in the UK and Europe with some amazing things in the pipeline for 2012 - including A&R'ing for their own label - SinQ Records.
