more details » Happy Cycling presents PHIL DOCKERTY (Statikman/Futureshock) Im really looking forward to this exclusive bar set from House veteran Phil Dockerty, Phil is best known for his work as part of Futureshock, the electronic duo he formed with Alex Tepper at the end of the 90's. But his career in DJing and Production began a decade earlier when he started his DJ journey in the clubs and bars around Birmingham. His early studio edits led to regular guest mixes on UK radio, these included a regular Sunday evening mix for BBC radio that evolved to become the Essential Mix show. He started Urban Hero Records and worked closely with Birmingham based Network Records prior to starting Futureshock and signing to London's Junior Boys Own. Their Debut single 'Sparc' launched the Futureshock & Junior label Fuju and the genre-defying track found It's way into record boxes of DJ's from across the scene. It was this and other mixes for labels that included Bedrock, Defected, Yoshtoshi and Azuli that helped them achieve the award for 'Best Underground Act' (Dancestar 2001). Remix credits include Futureshock versions of The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Moby, New Order, Groove Armada, Danny Tenaglia, Green Velvet, Luke Slater and Saint Etienne. The album 'Phantom Theory' (Parlophone/EMI) was released in 2003 receiving star reviews in the dance press and launched Phil and Alex into a diary of live shows that included Glastonbury, Leeds and Reading Festival, Homelands and Creamfields in the UK. International appearances included Dance Valley (NL), Skol Beats (Brazil), Gatecrasher (Moscow) and Zoukfest (Malaysia). They also supported Underworld on live shows across the UK and on shows in Asia, a highlight being electraglide in Tokyo. His DJ sets (both solo and with Futureshock) have taken him across the UK, Europe, South America and Asia. JAH SHAKA, the originator and the inspiration for the all the other UK sound systems. Jah Shaka has been operating a London-based, roots reggae Jamaican sound system since the early 1970s. His name is an amalgamation of the Rasta term for God and that of a Zulu warrior, Shaka Zulu. Jah Shaka events are renowned for attracting a wide audience from all backgrounds and races. Shaka believes it to be a testament to the quality of the message that he expounds in his choice of music and his Rastafarian beliefs. Shaka stayed true to his Rastafarian beliefs during the 1980s when many other Sound Systems had started to follow the Jamaican trend towards playing dancehall music. His refusal to compromise inspired a host of new UK reggae artists and Sound Systems such as Eastern Sher, The Disciples, Iration Steppas, Jah Warrior, Channel One Sound System, Conscious Sounds, The Rootsman and Abashanti-I. Non-reggae artists such as Basement Jaxx have also cited Jah Shaka as an influence during interviews. On his own record label he has released music from Jamaican artists such as Max Romeo, Johnny Clarke, Bim Sherman and Prince Alla as well as UK groups such as Aswad and Dread & Fred. He has released a number of dub albums, often under the Commandments of Dub banner. In 1980 Shaka played himself in the film Babylon (directed by Franco Rosso), operating his Sound System in a soundclash at the climax of the story. In 1989 Shaka visited Jamaica and worked with many musicians there, including King Tubby. The Jah Shaka Sound System continues to appear regularly in London, with occasional tours of the United States, Europe and Japan. Darren's Bio: Communication is the focus of all forms is the basis of Darren's approach weather it be large community Social interaction, on a global scale, relationships, social groups or the work place he is partially interested in how we use language and sound to relate to each other Darren has an interesting approach to how we view and use words, breaking the words down, looking at the origins of language and speech. He also delves into the sacred geometry of the letters we use, that are used in other languages both old and new. Working with sound, vibration, tone, chanting and other techniques his holistic approach looks at Theological/Spiritual linguistics with tools and techniques we can use everyday. Darren has had a very varied and interesting background working in all areas of the community, in his younger years he worked for the Scottish Parliament and blew the whistle on a massive expenses fraud, astonished by the media handling of the situation, it lead to him questioning all areas of our parliamentary/government system. First hand experience mixed with his interest in words lead him to look into Law and legislation … And the massive difference between the two! Started on the Freeman exploration with years of research and study he found a lot more than he expected about how corrupt our system now is. He looked at how our communities are crumbling because of the monopolization of our services, because everything is run on profit and not efficiency. His talks focus on solutions – with unique applications that work on a personal level as well on a much larger scale. One of the founders of the Peoples Public Trust. His experience as a speaker over the past 6 years includes large corporate training, festivals, workshops, festivals and one on one sessions. Darren has been involved with several community projects that work towards sustainability and empowering people right from the grass roots.
